Peace Corps volunteers in The Gambia participate in ecotourism projects. There are more than 75 volunteers in The Gambia working with their communities on projects in agriculture, education and health.  These volunteers work with and help locals living near national parks and other tourist sites to develop the ecotourism industry. Their goal is to help local people provide ecotourism services and products that will grow the economy and the skills of its citizens. These same volunteers also train locals in business and business-management; promoting the growth of local ecotourism businesses.

During their service in The Gambia, Volunteers learn to speak local languages, including Jola, Mandinka, Fula, Sarahule, and wolof. More than 1800 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in The Gambia since the program was established in 1967.
